St. Louis Stops Along Route 66

Route 66

Is there a more iconic American highway than Route 66? Known as the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and the Main Street of America, U.S. Route 66 was part of the original United States highway system established in 1926.

Quite a bit of the original highway is still in use here in Missouri.

In the St. Louis area, two different roads that were part of Route 66 during different eras are home to numerous attractions that tell the story of America's past. These are our real estate agents' favorite roadside attractions on Route 66.

  • Crown Candy Kitchen - 1401 St. Louis Ave., St. Louis, MO 63106
    The oldest soda fountain in St. Louis, Crown Candy Kitchen offers an experience that truly feels like stepping back in time. Crown Candy Kitchen is located just minutes from many St. Louis homes for sale, on a street that was part of Route 66 from 1926 to 1928. But the shop dates all the way back to 1913, and they've been serving great malts, shakes, BLTs and roast beef cheddar melts ever since.

  • Missouri History Museum - 5700 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63112
    You'll learn about every era of Missouri's past at the Missouri History Museum. That certainly includes the Route 66 period, but the museum—itself a St. Louis monument dating back to 1866—also offers exhibits on everything from the Lewis and Clark era to the Jazz Age. Photos and collections from the Missouri Historical Society are also housed here.

  • Donut Drive In - 6525 Chippewa St., St. Louis, MO 63109
    Coffee and donuts from the iconic Donut Drive In have fueled many weary travelers on their way out west. This St. Louis staple has been serving classic baked goods for more than 70 years now, and they don't show any signs of slowing down. 

  • Crestwood Bowl - 9822 Watson Rd., St. Louis, MO 63126
    You'll see the historic sign for Crestwood Bowl blinking from a mile away, inviting you to take a break from the road and bowl a few rounds. That sign was originally erected in 1957 and later restored in 2012 thanks to a grant from the National Park Service. The interior of the bowling alley, including its sports bar and lunch counter, doesn't appear to have changed much either.

  • Route 66 State Park - 1628, 97 N Outer Rd., Eureka, MO 63025
    With a visitor center inside a former roadhouse built in 1935 on the original Route 66, Route 66 State Park offers more than its fair share of history. You'll find a lot of classic artifacts and memorabilia on display here, and the outdoor portion of the park is a great place to stretch your legs on some picturesque nature trails.   • Jesse James Wax Museum - I-44, Stanton, MO 63079
    The Jesse James Wax Museum is the kind of kitschy roadside attraction that could only exist along Route 66. 5 Tips for Selecting a Pet Sitting Service

If you are considering one of our St. Louis homes for sale, you are probably looking at a new community. You might not know your neighbors well enough to ask them to look after your dog. A kennel may work once in a while, and pet daycare could be an option. But our real estate agents suggest you consider another solution: a pet sitter who can come to your home. But where do you begin? These simple tips can get you started:

  1. Use Reputable Resources
    Some of the trade associations that can help you initiate your search are The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), Pet Sitters International, and Fetch! Pet Care. Each offers a locator listing professionals in your area. Once you have located sitters you want to interview, check their references and reviews. When reviewing comments, make sure there is a "verified stay" indicator to ensure they were written by actual customers.

  2. Select Bonded and Insured Sitters
    These designations don't just mean that you are protected in case of loss. They mean that the sitter has invested in a layer of trust between them and their customers, assuring quality and the integrity of the person entering your home when you are not present. Consider also a criminal background check and proof of sufficient training to perform services well. 

  3. Arrange for Introductions
    It's important that you feel confident in the person that will be providing care. You'll want to watch the sitter interact with your pet. Dogs and cats are automatically drawn to some people and are equally repelled by others. You'll want to make sure that your pets are comfortable with the sitter and do not exhibit fear or nervousness around them. Make sure you allow time for them to meet and greet each other appropriately so that the sitter has the opportunity to comfort the pet. If your pet is not frequently socialized, this could take a little time for them to develop a rapport. 

  4. Thoroughly Discuss Expectations
    Let the sitter know what services you expect and with what frequency. If you expect the pet to be walked, brushed, taken to dog parks or other activities or services, be sure to let the sitter know and obtain a formal agreement. It's important that they can commit the time and energy to meet your expectations. Include start and end times for each session. If there are activities you don't want them to do, be clear in your instructions. Make sure the sitter is aware of any dietary restrictions such as treats versus no treats or specific brands that should be avoided. 

  5. Plan for Emergencies
    Prominently display contact information for you, emergency veterinary services, pet insurance information, and a secondary contact. Maintain a medical history for the pet in case the sitter must seek vet care in your absence. Make sure that you are able to reach the sitter via phone or email every day you are away. Agree upon a backup plan for any emergency that could arise, including a substitute sitter in case the regular sitter is unable to fulfill the agreement.

        When purchasing a home, ordering a home inspection is an essential item to add to your to-do list. Our real estate agents know that a home inspection is vital for revealing major and minor issues with a home. While a home inspection will cost you, detecting issues now can help you save money in the long run and give you peace of mind about the property you are buying. Here are some home issues detected by a home inspection. 

        1. Problems with the Grading
          If the grading of the home's lot isn't scaled correctly, this can cause water to flow towards your home. Your foundation and crawlspace may have excessive levels of moisture; this can cause the frame of your home to rot or lead to the formation of mold. The placement of the windows and doors can also shift, eventually causing the home to appear uneven. 
        1. Issues with the Roof
          A home's roof is a common source of issues during a home inspection. Since the roof covers such a large surface area, it's easy for a shingle or two to be damaged during a storm. This can allow water to seep in and damage the home's underlayment or ceiling. Or, the roof itself may be nearing the end of its lifespan. Your home inspector will also examine the components around the roof, like the gutters. It's common for gutters to be clogged and require cleaning. Or, a downspout might not be long enough to properly re-direct water away from your home. 
        1. Trouble with the Windows
          Many home inspections reveal problems in and around the windows. If the windows are older, the problem may be that they aren't very energy efficient. Or, the windows can have cracks around them that need to be sealed. Problems with the windows can raise the home's heating and cooling costs and impact the air quality.         1. Complications with the Plumbing

          A home's exterior is another common source of issues detected in a home inspection. Wood homes must be closely examined for signs of rot and mildew. These projects must also be completed according to the local building code, or the home will potentially have illegal modifications.         7 Tips for Arranging a Gallery Wall

        Your home should be filled with things that inspire you, make you feel comfortable, and create joy in your life. Creating a special gallery wall that showcases cherished artwork, photos, and collectibles is one way to add personal style to your home. Whether you love paintings, photography, old family portraits, or antique plates, a gallery wall will add visual interest to any room, even a staircase.

        To create the perfect gallery wall, you need to focus on hanging items cohesively so no one item stands out above the rest. It is a bit of a challenge, but it's easier when you follow certain steps.

        1. Choose the Location
          The first step is choosing a location with some natural light and enough wall space. If you're hanging less than 5 or 6 smaller items, an entry, hallway, or bathroom is a good choice. If you plan to hang 10 or more large items in various sizes, consider a large room in the house or a staircase.

        2. Measure the Wall
          Once you choose a location, measure the entire height and width of the wall, then decide on the amount of space needed to hang gallery items. It's best to leave a border of 1 to 2 feet above furniture items and between wall edges and ceilings.

        3. Choose Frames
          If you're hanging artwork or photographs, you need to choose frames that complement other things in your room. To keep your gallery wall cohesive, it's best to keep framing materials and finishes to a minimum. It's okay to mix wood and metal frames but choose similar finishes.

        4. Assemble Items
          Items on a gallery wall should complement each other. You can combine landscape paintings with scenic photographs, family photos with old memorabilia; black and white photographs with old quilts; and antique plates with woven textiles. Be creative, but don't let one item on the wall become the main focus.

        5. Plan the Layout
          Before you begin hanging, plan the layout by placing items on the floor first. Make paper templates of each item or use painter's tape to create size and placement on the wall. When you're hanging various shapes and sizes, using templates or tape first will prevent unnecessary nail holes in your wall.

        6. Create Visual Balance
          Gallery walls rarely have items with the same shapes and sizes. It's the variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and subjects that create visual interest and design appeal. It's often easier to place the larger items first then fill in spaces with smaller items. Gallery walls don't have to be symmetrical, just visually balanced.

        7. Hang Large Items First
          When you're happy with your layout, you can begin hanging your gallery wall. Hang large or most important items first, then hang smaller items around them, leaving 2 to 6 inches between items. If you make a mistake, don't worry. It's easy to fill the nail hole with putty and try again.
