Visit the World Chess Hall of Fame's Latest Exhibition

Chess Hall of Fame

If chess had a "greatest hits" collection, this would be it. Our real estate agents will be among the fans celebrating Mind, Art, Experience: 10 Years of Chess & Culture at the World Chess Hall of Fame, only minutes from St. Louis homes for sale

History of the World Chess Hall of Fame

  • The museum's story begins in 1986 when it was first established as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame. At the time, the fledgling collection was small enough to be housed in the basement of the United States Chess Federation headquarters in New Windsor, NY.

  • Four years later, the U.S. Chess Trust bought the museum and relocated the collection to Washington, D.C. Over the next ten years, acquisitions included the 1993 World Team Chess Championship trophy won by the U.S. and U.S. Chess Hall of Fame inductee plaques.

  • Once again, the museum moved, taking up residence in Miami, FL, in 2001. Along with a new multi-million dollar home, the museum gained a new name and became the World Chess Hall of Fame. While the collection continued to grow, the museum ultimately closed in 2009.

  • During the interim, St. Louis became a hot spot for chess thanks to the international reputation of the city's Chess Club and Scholastic Center. Local philanthropists Jeanne and Rex Sinquefield generously funded the museum's move to the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis.

The Museum Today

  • Visitors to the three-story museum, across the street from the Chess Club and Scholastic Center, are greeted by the World's Largest Chess Piece as certified by Guinness World Records. Measuring 20' tall, this massive king is made from African sapele mahogany and weighs in at 10,860 pounds.

  • The third floor holds the World and U.S. Halls of Fame, with plaques corresponding to each member. Each year, the World and U.S. Chess Federations make their respective nominations to the U.S. Chess Trust, which conducts a vote for final approval.

  • The museum's collection supports its two-fold mission: document the history of chess and explore its influence on art and culture. Artifacts include trophies, scoresheets, photographs, and chess sets connected to significant players and events. Other items include unique, and novelty chess sets, such as one designed by artist Emil Pott for iconic jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co.

  • There's always something going on at the museum, which hosts a number of fundraisers, lectures, musical performances, and other special events. Examples include the Music Series and Composer Series along with Jingle, a holiday pop-up, and the Spooky Scavenger Hunt for Halloween.

Mind, Art, Experience: 10 Years of Chess & Culture

  • In honor of the museum's first decade in St. Louis, Mind, Art, Experience: 10 Years of Chess & Culture is a retrospective of the 50 exhibits featured over that span. More than 120 artifacts and artworks are on hand, many of them representing legends of the game, such as Bobby Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, and Garry Kasparov. A number of artifacts are on loan from notable collections and institutions around the country.

  • Mind, Art, Experience: 10 Years of Chess & Culture is on display through Sunday, July 17. A special reception is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. Admission to the museum and the reception is free, with a suggested donation of $3 per person and $5 per family. Museum hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon - 5 p.m. Sunday.

Missouri Small Towns for Your 2022 Move

Missouri Small Towns

If you're planning to move to Missouri from out of state or are already a resident of the Show-Me State who's looking to move to another area, larger cities such as St. Louis or Jefferson City probably come to mind. Those are certainly popular places to live but don't overlook the state's charming small towns. They have many amenities to offer, such as scenic views and access to state parks, and they're often located within an hour or less of a major city.

Our real estate agents suggest checking out the following small towns in Missouri you'll want to move to in 2022:

  • Washington
Located about 50 minutes west of downtown St. Louis, Washington is the largest community between St. Louis County and Jefferson City. It's situated on the Missouri River's most southern point and is also at the junction of state highways 100 and 47. The town was officially founded in 1839, but settlers were already living in the area when Lewis and Clark started their westward expedition in 1804.

Washington has a population of a little over 14,000 people, and it's known as the "corncob pipe capital of the world" since it's home to Missouri Meerschaum, which manufactures the pipes. It's also known for its museums, wineries, theaters, shops, festivals, and more, making Washington homes for sale part of a vibrant community. The unemployment rate is lower than the U.S. average, as is its cost of living, further making Washington an attractive place to call home.

  • Farmington
Farmington is located in St. Francois County, about 60 miles south of St. Louis at the edge of the beautiful Ozark Mountains, and close to 20,000 people call it home. Established in 1822 as Murphy's Settlement, the town was called St. Francois Court House for a brief time when the county was organized and was later named Farmington.

It's close to several state parks and has its own city park system, so residents have abundant opportunities to camp, fish, swim, bicycle ride, hike, play disc golf, and more. Attractions such as Bonne Terre Mine, the Farmington Waterpark & Splash Pad, and Farmington Skate Park provide plenty of entertainment near Farmington homes for sale. Residents also enjoy browsing in the unique shops in the historic downtown area.

  • Hermann

About the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra

St Louis Orchestra

Our real estate agents missed a lot of things in 2020, but few losses were felt more deeply than missing live music from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. We were overjoyed to learn that the orchestra was returning for the 2021-22 season.

If you're new to St. Louis—or have simply never had an opportunity to watch the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra perform in person—it's an experience you simply must-have. The winter months are the perfect time to see a concert, so let's take a moment to get to know the SLSO.

History of the St. Louis Symphony

The St. Louis Symphony traces its roots back to the founding of the St. Louis Choral Society in 1880. The St. Louis Choral Society merged with the St. Louis Musical Union 10 years later, forming what would eventually become the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

With a history that can now be traced back more than 140 years, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is the second-oldest orchestra in America. In that time, the SLSO has made more than 100 recordings resulting in 60 Grammy Award nominations and nine wins. It has earned a reputation as one of America's finest orchestras.

Meet Your Musical Director

The SLSO has a long and storied history of accomplished musical directors, beginning with Joseph Otten, who served in that role from 1880 to 1894. The latest, Stéphane Denève, who now guides the orchestra into its 142nd season, is no exception.

Stéphane Denève served as a guest conductor with the SLSO eight times before joining as a full-time musical director. Born in France, Denève also serves as musical director of the Brussels Philharmonic and shares his time between the two cities.

Spectacular Powell Hall

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra first performed at Mercantile Library Hall, and later moved around to various venues throughout the city, including the St. Louis Grand Exposition Hall. It found its permanent residence in Powell Hall beginning in 1967.

Located just minutes away from these St. Louis homes for sale, Powell Hall is a resplendent theater with stunning architecture and state-of-the-art sound. The 2,689-seat hall was originally constructed in 1925 and served as a theater for Vaudeville shows and silent movies in its early years.

Upcoming Performances

There's a lot to look forward to from the SLSO this year! In addition to resuming its regular schedule this season, the orchestra will also be picking up its Movie Magic series, in which the musicians perform a classic film score while the original movie is projected as a backdrop.

Check out the full calendar of upcoming events on the SLSO website, and get your tickets now to these exciting performances this winter:

  • Stéphane Conducts Brahms: Musical Director Stéphane Denève brings Johannes Brahms' First Symphony to life for two performances on January 7th and 8th.

  • Romeo and Juliet: Stéphane Denève conducts the SLSO featuring virtuoso violinist Augustin Hadelich through the music of Romeo and Juliet, including Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto.

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Concert: The SLSO performs music honoring Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday, January 17th.

  • Harry Potter in Concert: The orchestra performs John Williams' classic score to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I on January 21, 22, and 23 as the film is projected on a screen behind them.

St. Louis has always been one of America's great hubs for art and culture, and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is just the tip of the iceberg. Contact us today to learn more about life in St. Louis, and talk to our real estate agents about finding your dream home in St. Louis today.

With ponds, lakes, and streams, open meadows, shady woods, and manicured gardens, it's the best place in St. Louis to experience the tranquility of nature. One of the park's most famous attractions is the pavilion dating back to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Forest Park is also home to the St. Louis Art Museum, which is open to the public free of charge.
